THE EDEN ALTERNATIVE MISSION STATEMENT AT GNH:

"To increase the joy in our residents' daily lives by creating a natural environment where they can nurture and give attention to companion animals, living plants and children."


GNH embraces The Eden Alternative, developed by Dr. William H. Thomas, an east-coast physician in family medicine and geriatrics. He created this philosophy while working as the medical director of a nursing home. At the core of Thomas' concept is his belief that the "three plagues" of nursing homes (loneliness, helplessness and boredom) can be eliminated by incorporating living plants, children and animals into a facility's daily life and activities.
